Ok, I am having a problem posting links. I got the new mac-areobook, not because I care on splurging for garageband and iPhoto, but because it was the lightest laptop I could find. I am having trouble adjusting to the mousepad however, and as a result, did a weird thing where my computer does not show me the urls of sites that I visit. If anyone has advice for how to fix it, I'd really appreciate it. In the meantime however, I am linking what I can, and providing google-able titles for what I can't, before the number of links I want to share accumulates beyond comprehension.
How the women of Libya participated in the revolution:
There is an interesting article from Slate.com by Brian Palmer, entitled "The Captain Requests That All Zippers Be Returned to the Upright Position"
How are flight attendants supposed to deal with fornicating passengers?
The article is exactly what it sounds like: It discusses how flight attendants deal with fornication onboard. Apparently, post-9/11, people trying to have sex in airplane bathrooms may find themselves singled out as security threats. Not to worry, for those of you who can't bear to think of a sex-free plane rid: Apparently Virgin Atlantic (ironically, given its name) is more accommodating.
There is another Slate.com article entitled "Ashley Mears' "Pricing Beauty: What a Sociologist learned by moonlighting as a fashion model". Given that the fashion model industry consists of objectifying women for commercials and magazines, it is no surprise to learn that said women are underpaid and mistreated, but the article is fascinating and makes me want to read the book.
The Slate XX blog has an article called "Discouraging Math Smarts in Girls", that focuses on a Forever 21 t-shirt for girls that says "Allergic to Algebra". Another says "I'm too pretty for my homework". The author fears - and I agree - that in addition to discrimination against girls when other perceive that they are either not as smart/as good as math at boys or that their smarts mean they are not as attractive (since pop culture considers smarts and beauty in girls mutually exclusive), there is the risk of girls dumbing themselves down in order to appear beautiful in the eyes of society.
There is also a cute article on haaretz.com called "One Palestinian Romeo's Journey to Reunite with His Gaza Strip Juilet". The article is exactly what is sounds like.
I hope to write more soon, but in the meantime, I hope you enjoy these articles.
